Sky Cat's Sky Kingdom

Sky Cat lives in a magical land of floating islands. The inhabitants get around on flying turtles and occasionally on flying eels. Schools of winged fish and butterflies flitter and fly around the city.

In other words, I just finished this drawing, which I think was possibly more grueling than the last Sky Cat one. I'm excited about how it came out, though I'm pretty exhausted from making it.

YOU ALL SHOULD CLICK HERE AND GO BUY A PRINT OF IT.

Oh, you thought that last Sky Cat poster was the last of these ridiculous things I've been drawing lately. But, NO!! I decided to draw another one of these things... Sky Cat's Magical Kingdom.

I'm busy coloring it now.

I figure one/week of these on top of the 5 pages/week of Angel and the weekly church bulletin illustrations plus any other things like laundry and drawing group and cooking dinner so it's ready for when my wife gets home and taking the dog out and doing other freelance jobs is a good pace to keep. So I'm going for it. Another poster, another week.

So I was hanging out with Ulises yesterday and I asked him if he could give me a challenge. He asked what I thought was difficult, and I was like... oh, I don't know... lots of detail, particularly having lots of characters on a page. So he was like... do that, then. 100 bodies on a page. Try to make them all different. Later on when I still couldn't figure out what I wanted to do, he said try picking a theme. How about a sky ecosystem?

SO... my friend DarrylAyo always calls one of my cats "Sky Cat" because he's hanging out up on the balcony, hiding in the plants all the time. So I was like... what about a Sky Cat drawing. And then I was like, and of course Sky Cat would have sky fish to eat. And I'm sure Sky Cat would be fighting something awesome like dinosaurs.

I stayed up til 5 am penciling this. Inked it all today. I'm going to color it digitally, and then I was thinking of making it into a poster. What do you think?

Ok Ok... I know I've talked about Jumbly Junkery 8 for a while now (on my website, at least), but I've still not gotten around to actually posting things online for people to buy. Nor for Jumbly Junkery 7, either, I don't think...

So, tonight I amended that! For your consumption purposes, Jumbly Junkery 4, 5, 6, 7, AND 8 are all for sale on my Etsy store. I'm sure most of you already have 4, 5, and 6, so there's only one in the store (to save on listing fees), but I put 3 each of 7 and 8 for sale right now. You should buy them. ALSO... if you want all 5, I have a special buy 4 get 1 free offer. All 5 for $20! Just email me and ask about it to wormulus [at] gmail [dot] com. Or just PayPal the money there, too. That would work. These comics are too hot to stay! I also have some prints and original artwork for sale! Get 'em while they last!

**************************

In other news, I've been chugging away at this "Angel" story for the past several weeks. If you haven't seen it already the first page is here. A new page every single day Monday through Friday until it's done. So much excitement planned for this week! That there above is the ad I made for it for Project Wonderful. You could probably also steal it from my flickr site and put it places and tell all your friends about it if you were so inclined. I'd hope you might be so inclined.

And in case any of you were wondering what I've been feeding my brain to churn out such a ridiculous story, well, here's some of my current brain fodder, happily shared with all of you.

First and foremost... Moebius (aka Jean Giraud). If you haven't heard of this guy or aren't able to recognize his work (even if you can't remember his name), you need to check it out. Seriously. His linework is incredible, his details wonderful. Also, he designed the costumes/set for Tron. AND he also inspired the opening scene for Blade Runner. He's a definite must-read. The guy could churn out work like crazy!

Whenever I go to a comic store, I always scour them, trying desperately to find some hidden gem. Generally this involves European comics from the 70s and 80s... preferably in color. Those dudes made some awesome shit back then! Both of my favorites of this area have come from Jim Hanley's Universe in Manhattan. First off, the main inspiration for this "Angel" story I've been doing... "Rebel", by Pepe Moreno (a Spanish comic artist). This comic is the quintessential action comic. Car chases galore! Women! Evil guys! GUNS! And more car chases! The plot is... forgettable. Hell, I've read it cover to cover at least 5 times and I still am not 100% sure what happens. But it doesn't matter! Because it's just. that. awesome.

The other book that I absolutely adore is "The Age of Darkness" by Caza. <del>Also Spanish, I think.</del> Another French guy like our good man Moebius. It's more on the fantasy, less on the action. But the stories are actually quite good. And as you can see, the art is heavily Moebius inspired.

Other than the European comics, I've been stealing inspiration from the second collected book of "The Savage Sword of Conan". I highly recommend checking it out if you want some panel layout inspiration as well as some references for a) horses, b) shirtless guys, c) scantily clad women, and d) fights. For the price, it's totally worth it. Even if you don't read it.

.
.
.
.
.
.
Now go read some comics!

And then, well, I guess I'll see what excitement I come up with today! I don't know where I'm going after that. All I can guarantee, though, is that there will be comics every single day of the week and drawings interspersed with comics on the weekend. 7 days of fun! I don't know.

Long story short, though, I will be drawing at least 5 pages of comics/week for the next year and a half. This means fewer straight up illustrations/drawings/whatever, but more comics for you. So I hope you take advantage of this and go over to my website and subscribe to the RSS somehow. Or just bookmark it. Whatever. Just read it, ok?

In similar and related news, today is page 6 of a comic about Hurricane Katrina. The comic starts here if you want to read it now. I will probably post the first page of it here when it's done and send a link to the whole thing if you prefer waiting. Though... I know I never seem to want to wait.

In art news, I'm in the Everybody Get Up show that's opening on Sept. 11 in Alameda, CA. I have three pieces there!
So... I've decided to do this Sequential Endurance Competition. Wish me luck! I mostly do that already, but that means I will cut down on random drawings/illustrations and focus on comics for the forseeable future. 5 days of comics/wk (M-F), and Sat/Sun for drawings/illustrations/sharing other things (since the SEC calls only for 5 days/wk of comics and I have other things I like to share).

Here's the comic for tomorrow (or today if you're reading this on August 31) on my website.

For future reference in SEC, I will be posting everything on my website by midnight on the day due. Basically, this means I will be posting everything the day before (if not more days in advance in case of being away from the computer) and things will go live at midnight on the day of. So, in other words, you on LJ get to see this drawing that will be live on my website in 45 minutes... well... 45 minutes before any other people who aren't reading my LJ. (also, you get a link to my flickr site where the photo is hosted and where you can see other things).

Anyway. If that made any sense, then great. If not, then ask questions. Otherwise, keep reading my comics and tell all your friends to cheer me on in this competition (or to just read my comics regardless of the competition. More readers is always better).

Ok. So I haven't posted in LJ for like a million years, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy.

First off, there's always new comics at my website (except for the 10 days I missed while moving/unpacking my house). For example, this is the first page of a two page comic (second page is up today. Clicking will take you to my website)

In addition to that comic, there are also more things that I haven't posted about on here. A couple of drawings by my wife. Drawings. Etc. Etc.

Secondly, I have a swanky new apartment! It is a loft. Huge! Skylight! Spiral staircase! Excitement! But I don't have any photos of that right off hand, so I'll try to take/post some later. It's great, though.

The cats are begging quite loudly for food, so I need to stop poking around LJ and bike to the store to feed them. You'd think from the sound of it that they never got fed at all!

Sometimes when I'm looking for inspiration, I flip through my old sketchbooks. Occasionally I find something that catches my eye in a new way. I found this while flipping through one from several years ago. I remember liking it when I did it, and then being somewhat eh about it. But for some reason, it really captured me when I looked at it again so I decided to scan it and touch it up/photoshop out the page crease so I could potentially make a small print of it. I did this in my moleskine after I got a cheap set of oil paints. I was just starting to play around with incorporating collage into paintings/drawings at that time. Maybe I should try playing around some more with oils. I've been on a gouache/acrylic/watercolor kick lately... but maybe after I move (into a new loft with space for me to have a dedicated studio!) I should pick back up the oils again (from the bottom of my box of paints) and work on a larger panel or something.

Moving is expensive. But we're hoping that this new place (a loft in Red Hook) will be the place big enough for us to not have to move for another 5 years or so. It even has enough space for me to have a dedicated studio (which will mean more things to show you all)! Money is tight, though, so any little bit helps! I'm also available for commissions if anyone is interested.

Hey. You guys should check out Mixapp and come listen to music with me online. (assuming you're not already on mixapp). It's like sharing a playlist and listening to music in the same (virtual) room... people can queue up different stuff and rearrange them and the like. There's also a chat attached to each room that people are listening in. Only works on macs/iphones/ipods(?) for now. It's still in private invitation beta testing, and I think they want more users/feedback. (Just don't be an ass, ok? This is me vouching for your invitation).

Life has been so busy lately! Taking this crazy class on Wednesday nights starting at 10pm and I usually don't get home til 3:30 or 4am or sometimes even 4:30 in the morning. Throws my entire schedule off like having a wheel with some really heavy off-balanced lump in it that just lurches the whole wheel when it turns around.

But besides all that, I have a new painting for sale on my etsy store.

***********************

I also am happy to do commissions if anyone has any requests. Email me at wormulus[at]gmail[dot]com or else message me here or something. I promise my prices are pretty reasonable and I could be convinced to be negotiable. We're moving this summer to a new apartment and it'd be nice knowing that I could help contribute to the whole first month rent/security deposit business and not just rely on completely depleting all of our savings. It'd also be nice to have some external motivation to make things I wouldn't otherwise make.

I can do stuff from messy mixed media like this

and this

to cartoony

to photo-realistic (but that would cost more and is definitely less fun for me)

I also do band posters for a pretty reasonable fee if you know of any bands needing promotion for a coming event. I really love doing posters like this.

So here goes.

I shared a table with Jess Fink (finkenstein), Phil McAndrew (heroprotagonist), Kristin Hogan, Jonathan T. Russell, and Always Comix. Crowded, but it seemed to work out ok. Especially ok considering just how price gouging the entrance fee is! GEEZ. And they're raising it a ridiculous amount, too.

I agree with the complaints about it being 1) hot, and 2) poorly organized. They seemed like they didn't have their shit together AT ALL. SPX, you've totally won me over for organization, fun, and location. MoCCA... I only go to you because it's NYC and I live here. However, due to the fact that I split the table with so many people, I actually did manage to make a meager profit. Into the Hello Kitty bank it went! (yes, my piggy bank is actually a Hello Kitty bank).

I traded for some awesome comics. Erin Griffin's "Ramona and Imogene" and her newest "Peaches gets Pinched"... both wonderful and great. So cute. So nicely made. Sally Bloodbath's "Girls Don't Make Passes at Boys with Moustaches"... also great. The only book I actually bought (I only get $30/wk allowance and I'm trying to, oh, I don't know, save up for that honeymoon we never took) was "The Moth or the Flame" which I've been meaning to buy for, like, forever. I really wanted to get "Mourning Star 2", but no such luck money-wise. boxbrown's "Unsyndicated Press" was also great. OH! And a great surprise and wonderful treat was piratecore's amazing bundle of stuff. I feel honored to even get one! I'm sure I'm forgetting things (both great and small), but please forgive me because...

I got the nerd flu. Yes. I left MoCCA and that night had a fever and a sore throat. It lingered. I think my fever is mostly gone, but I have a super sore throat.

One last thing about MoCCA, though, I went to the Frank Santoro and Gary Panter talk (which was incredible, I thought), and left having drawn this:

*************************

On to other things. I've been busy at work for my intensive graphic design portfolio class. I did this today, sickness and all. I think it's a start in the right direction:

Just as some shameless pre-MoCCA self-promotion, look! I'm today's guest strip on The Daily Cross Hatch!

Also, here are some of the covers for the new Jumbly Junkery (#7) drying in my kitchen. MoCCA will be their grand debut!

Oh man. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Spent yesterday screen printing those covers and then stapling them to the insides. Box of comics to bring is all packed. Will have Jumbly Junkery #4, 5, 6, and 7, and also this 24-hour comic I did, "!". I will also have some block prints for sale... one of a robot, one of he-man, and one of she-ra.
For example:

Can't seem to find the buttons I made last year. Weirrrrrd. Small apartment and I STILL lose things. Oh well. I can always find/bring them to SPX.

Also, I will have my sketchbooks from years past with me if you want to see them. I'm always happy to share! I'm starting moleskine #9 just now. So that means 8 past ones to browse through.

Excitement!!!!!!!!!!!!
