Last time:
Tozo decided to investigate the Neptune Spa, where Lello had a locker.

Here’s a couple of new characters for you: Airvison reporter Smiles Zoot and his faithful camera-man Rollo. Airvision is a fairly new innovation in the city.
There’s a thoughtful review of Tozo by author Mark Clapham here. (Thanks to Warwick for the heads up.)

I stayed inside and piled all my grandparents' stuffies on my head during black friday, so I didn't buy a thing! If you are like me, and fear being trampled on any old day at the shops--let alone in December--perhaps you'd like some holiday shopping help? I put a few paintings up on My Etsy Shop, plus I added my Mickey's Diner Print to my BigCartel Store, and screwed around with a goofy Linney T-Shirt.

I'M BACK IN VERMONT AND I'M AT PAGE 95!

Check out the story so far on flickr.

Six pages to go, with two days left in November.

QUESTION: should I print this up as a little book? It would be little- 5.5" x 4.25", and I'd want to do a short, bonus Sir Christopher story to round it out. Would anyone wanna buy that?

December Equals Tales of the Tall-Heads

Nov. 28th, 2009 | 04:57 pm
posted by: [info]jamtorkberg

Well, December is going to be interesting for me. I will spend about half the month out of town and on the move, making comicing difficult. I really should just make a buffer of comics to tide me over, but nearly three weeks worth of buffers is not something I can really pull out of my ass.

SO! My solution is something kind of odd, a fusion of my daily comics and the somewhat defunct Tall-Head Adventures. Basically, you, the readers, will again offer suggestions as to what will happen from update to update, but this time rather than an adventure game presentation it will be a comic. I envision you guys being able to suggest lots of different aspects, from dialog to plot direction to character actions.

But just to make sure this kinda crazy thing will actually work, I am going to start early, basically making all of December (and then some) the month of Tales of the Tall-Heads. So let's get started!

As in the past, I would like to put as much control in your hands as possible. Starting with what the characters actually look and act like!

Head Concepts

Please choose two or three that you like, keeping in mind that your choices will not only inform such critical aspects as hair style but also personality. I decided not to force you to choose among costumes as I am sure you guys will be re-dressing them as the story go on anyway, if Tall-Head Adventures is any indication.

Second, how should these things be colored? Clearly I'm going back to an aliased look.

Color Concepts

An explanation of the above styles:

1 - Monochromatic in gray. There would be no limit to the number of shades.
2 - Monochromatic in a hue. Again, no limit to the number of shades.
3 - Full color. I would like to avoid this, as a time issue, but I thought I would put it out there in case you guys demand it.
4 - Monochromatic a hue, this time with a limit on the number of shades, say only three or four.
5 - Same as 1, only no shading.
6 - Same as 2, only with black outlines.
7 - Same as 5, only no shading.
8 - Plain ol' vanilla black and white.

This whole thing could be an awesome great time, or a total flop. Only way to find out is to give it a try!

WHAT SAY YOU!?!?

The Tudors

I think the CBC blew half its budget on The Tudors because the whole time that I lived in Toronto, every bus and every subway car was plastered with Jonathan Rhys Meyers' pouting face and ten yards of cleavage. I believe we've all learned a valuable lesson here, and that is William Cecil may have been a crack statesman, but if he wants to me to give a shit about him he better start hitting the gym.

Oh shit, I drew a Link I'm actually sorta happy with!

Based heavily off of the art of Link in the original Smash Bros. manual.
Speaking of which, does anyone know who did the art in the manual? Because their version of Fox was god-awful.

[Above, a very Neroid Thanksgiving. Below, the sparse Dispatch.]

  • Mark your calendars for next week, because on Saturday December 5th from 11am-7pm is the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. Guest artists include Gabrielle Bell, R. O. Blechman, and many more.
  • Thinking about putting some comic issues on your ChristmaHanuKwanzzukkah list? The Comic Book Resources has some Boom! Studio titles you can preview, including Dingo and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.
  • Looking for a convention with an awesome name? How about the Genghis Con in Cleveland.
  • It may be a few days after Thanksgiving, but there’s still time to give thanks for things such as sarcasm and Nedroid web-comic.
  • Try your Photoshop hand at the Worth 1000 animals as superheroes contest.
  • In light of the holidays (and the lack of news) here’s a song everyone should play on loop next Thanksgiving.

Busy Weekend

So far this weekend, I have:
Gone to the doctor's office

Called my sister

Made the following Thanksgiving dishes:
- Vegan macaroni & cheese from the Veganomicon
- [info]gaudior's yams with pears (thank you! Also, immersion blenders are amazing!)
- Mushroom-port gravy from the Veganomicon
- [info]snaegl's pumpkin pie (I substituted vegan yogurt for eggs and it didn't come out as fluffy as I wanted, but I grated my own spices so it was delicious anyway. Had a problem with the oil pie crust sticking to the parchment paper and had to press it in by hand but it was tasty).
- Olive cashew bread scrolls from Bread Machine (delicious!)
Then we went to [info]rax's family's place and played Beatles Rockband and drank a delicious lychee sake that [info]rathdei found, and ate waay too much delicious food. Rathdei, do you remember the name?

Hiked for 3 h in Middlesex fells w/ [info]ab3nd. "How do you get to the parking lot? Follow the orange trail. It's about 20m." 60 m later, Googling a map: "Hm. That....that would be another 3 h of walking." Eventually we did get back to the parking lot.

Made 2 kinds of fudge (vanillia and chocolate-marshmallow) and one kind of thing that should have been penuche fudge w/nuts but instead became caramel due to a cooling error. Oops.

Put up massive amounts of Christmas lights.

Watched a great movie ("Heathers") w/[info]rax.

Ordered new clogs since my old ones got a mysterious huge hole in the bottom and getting new ones is $20 cheaper than having the shoe repair place fix the old ones.

Yay!

Pocket knife for sale!

Nov. 28th, 2009 | 04:44 pm
posted by: [info]mattious

I had way better luck last time I needed to sell something posting on facebook and livejournal than I did posting on Craigslist, and I got the pleasure of selling to someone I knew to boot, so I'm going that route again:
I'm looking to move away from carrying a folding knife in favor of a small fixed blade, so would anybody like to buy my Kershaw Skyline from me?

You may remember seeing my skyline in my Comic Tools post about the NT cutter. As you can see in that entry I keep my skyline sharp, literally shaving sharp. Here's a fantastic YouTube review of it:
My skyline has some cosmetic damage but works as good as new and cuts better than new. If you buy it I'll send it to you with a fresh sharpening that I can damned near guarantee you will be sharper than anything else in your home. It will come in it's original box, with it's removable pocket clip attached. (I took it off because in NYC you have to keep knives completely concealed.) You'll be able to take advantage of Kershaw's very liberal lifetime warranty. You can send the blade in for free resharpening for life if you can't do it yourself, they'll fix or replace any part of the knife for life, and if for any reason, at any point, you're not happy with it, you can exchange your used knife for any Kershaw knife of equivalent price, or apply the cost of the knife to any more expensive blade, or use it's value toward the purchase of more than one less expensive blades. So, if you don't like the skyline but you DO like another Kershaw knife, trade it in.

My asking price is $17, which includes shipping.

WORST:

Catcher In The Rye- JD Sallinger
Twilight- Stephanie Meyer
Eragon- Christopher Paolini

Badly written, annoying protagonists. Holden Caufield is a spoiled brat, Bella Swan is a complete retard who can't seem to walk down a flight of stairs without ending up in mortal peril, and Eragon is a smug, borderline sociopathic Gary Stu with a messiah complex.

BEST:

American Gods- Neil Gaiman
Naked- David Sedaris
Howl's Moving Castle- Dianna Wynne Jones

AG
- Wonderfully written novel revolving around ethnic folk-stories gradually fading out as the immigrants who brought them to America homogenize into American culture and their beliefs in the legends fade. That and it's Neil Gaiman, how could it possibly suck?

Naked- Funny/awkward memoirs.

HMC- freaking awesome coming-of-age story about taking charge of your own life.

Influence

Nov. 28th, 2009 | 03:45 pm
posted by: [info]rosalarian

Most of the people who had a great influence on me, who were role models for me, are dead. But there is one person who is not: high school art teacher.

We caught up today. It's been about five years since I saw her last. (Six since I graduated from high school. Has it only been six years?)

We were quite close in high school. I'd stay after school lots of times, hanging out in the art room. I learned a lot from her, but she also let me do my own things. It was a perfect balance of freedom and structure.

And we had... the Art Cult.

"Dara, you're so talented! When I grow up, I wanna be juuuuuuust liiiiiiiiiike Daaara!" -All said in unison by six girls in high pitched voices. Whenever someone (not just Dara) did something really cool, we'd all say it. Creeped the hell out of everyone else in class, but god damn it was fun.

I'm not one of those people who wishes she could be back in high school. (For one thing, I'd have to deal with Twilight fans. I don't care one way or the other, and where I am in my life, nobody else I know cares either.) But it's nice to have someone help me remember the good times.

My memory is a terrible thing, full of holes, retaining the strangest things and tossing out things I want to keep. I keep my memories in other people.

Gingerbread Fire

Nov. 28th, 2009 | 01:52 pm
posted by: [info]onezumi

Well, I discovered that I might be allergic to Starbucks Gingerbread loaf this morning when my face became full of fire. It's all good...I can still drink the Gingerbread lattes. I'm about to go get my eyebrows waxed. I have learned the hard way that I'm incapable of doing this myself without looking like a clown.

I invented a horse bong for Thanksgiving. I also posted about Patrick Stewart who just released a piece about his troubled childhood full of domestic violence. Even Captain Picard had family problems. Something to think about.

Also, this comic I did about DRM is making it's rounds about the internetz and generally causing a shitstorm flamewar wherever it goes.

Later I'll go watch some Japanese Pro Wrestling. BRB.
